Rufus Wainwright – All I Want

Eén van de beste nummers van dit jaar is wat mij betreft All I Want van Joni Mitchell, dat hier gezongen wordt door Rufus Wainwright tijdens een eerbetoon voor Joni’s 75e verjaardag op 7 November 2018 in Los Angeles. Daar traden o.a. op James Taylor, Chaka Khan, Emmylou Harris, Diana Krall, Brandi Carlile, Seal, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos, Glen Hansard, Norah Jones & Graham Nash. Maar het beste optreden met stip was dat van Rufus Wainwright, die iedereen uit zijn stoel kreeg met zijn weergaloze versie van All I Want. Wat kan die man zingen, ongelofelijk! Sting zei het al in een bericht dat ik hier eerder plaatste, toen Rufus zijn lied Wrapped Around Your Finger coverde ter ere van Sting’s 60e verjaardag in 2011.

Joni Mitchell heeft veel relaties gehad met collega muzikanten, zoals met Leonard Cohen, David Crosby, Graham Nash en Jackson Browne. Ze schreef er ook vaak nummers over, zoals A Case Of You over Cohen. All I Want komt van Joni’s album Blue uit 1971 en gaat over haar relatie met James Taylor, die begon in de zomer van 1970. Zo komt in het lied een verwijzing voor naar de trui die ze voor hem breidde. James schreef in die periode ook zijn prachtige lied You Can Close Your Eyes voor haar. Hier zingen ze het samen tijdens een optreden in The Royal Albert Hall in Londen op 28 Oktober in 1970.  (Hier kun je het hele concert beluisteren.) Toen Joni begin 1971 bezig was met het maken van haar album Blue, waren ze nog steeds erg verliefd. Ondanks alle problemen door zijn verslavingen aan drank & heroïne had ze toch het gevoel dat ze goed bij elkaar pasten. Maar in Maart veroorzaakte zijn plotselinge succes frictie tussen hen en verbrak James de relatie. Het verlies was een grote schok voor haar.

Rufus Wainwright was lange tijd geen fan van Joni. Zijn moeder Kate McGarrigle (1946-2010) had haar muziek verbannen bij hen thuis. Ze was van een meer puristische richting in de folkmuziek en zag Joni als een “sell out” omdat ze zoveel succes had. Hij zegt erover “My mom was pretty jealous of that fame and of that success, and so I never listened to any Joni Mitchell records at all.” Pas 3 jaar geleden herontdekte hij haar muziek. “I of course was blown away. And realized how great she was, and it was a real discovery for me, since my mother had died and I was allowed to do that.”

The Staves & yMusic – The Way Is Read

Bij dit lied moest ik even wennen aan de complexe muziek, maar al snel kwam de focus te liggen op de bewondering voor de schitterende en indrukwekkende vocalen van het Engelse trio The Staves. Je kunt horen dat de drie zusters Staveley-Taylor (Jessica, Camilla & Emily) van jongs af aan met elkaar samen zingen, waardoor het een heel hecht & natuurlijk geheel vormt.

Ze spelen hun lied The Way Is Read, het titelnummer van hun laatste album uit 2017, samen met het modern klassieke sextet yMusic uit New York. Hun samenwerking kwam tot stand doordat ze gevraagd werden voor het Eaux Clair Hiver Festival van Justin Vernon (van Bon Iver) en Aaron Dessner (van The National), dat gehouden wordt in Eaux Clair in Wisconsin.

Emily Staveley-Taylor zegt over de samenwerking, “Our aim from the outset was to truly collaborate with yMusic. We wanted to feel like instruments and join in with some of yMusic’s existing work, using our voices in ways we hadn’t previously explored. We chopped up compositions and put them together again in new ways. We took old folk songs and made them abstract. The idea of forming an orchestra with these incredible musicians was fascinating. What we have ended up with is everything we’d hoped, more than we dreamed, and hopefully the tip of the iceberg.”

Rob Moose, violist van yMusic en mede-producer van de plaat, voegt daar het volgende aan toe, “When Justin raised the possibility of our groups collaborating, we immediately upped the stakes by focusing on a combination of new Staves songs and transformations of yMusic’s composed works. It was as much a thrill to hear songs emerge organically over sections of intricate chamber music as it was satisfying to strip songs of the instrument that created them, whether guitar or piano, in order to craft new connective tissue. This project was born of voice memos sent back and forth across the seas, two frenetic days in a Manhattan rehearsal space, a festival set, and a single day of recording in the woods outside of Eau Claire.”

Paul Carrack – It Ain’t Over

Ik luister graag naar de blue-eyed soul van de Engelse singer/songwriter Paul Carrack. En geniet dan van zijn geweldige stem en de perfecte timing die hij heeft. Carrack heeft al een lange carrière achter zich, die begon in de jaren 70 met de jazz-rock band Warm Dust. Daarna volgde pub-rock band Ace en was hij een tijdje toetsenist bij Roxy Music. In de jaren 80 was hij succesvol bij de groep Squeeze, speelde samen met Nick Lowe in Noise To Go en had hij veel succes in de groep Mike & The Mechanics (samen met Mike Rutherford van Genesis). Ook speelde hij samen met Roger Waters (bekend van Pink Floyd) in The Bleeding Heart Band.

Deze uitvoering van zijn heerlijke lied It Ain’t Over komt van zijn 13e album A Different Hat uit 2010, waarop hij samenspeelt met het Royal Philharmonic Orchestra op arrangementen van David Cullen. Het origineel komt van het gelijknamige album uit 2003.

Damien Rice -Trusty And True

Het is altijd genieten van de intense optredens van de Ierse singer/songwriter Damien Rice, zoals hier van zijn lied Trusty And True. Het komt van zijn album My Favourite Faded Fantasy uit 2014 en hij speelt het tijdens een huiskamerconcert in Parijs i 2017.

Het nummer begint rustig en ingetogen, maar opeens is daar een tweede stem van een vrouw, waardoor ik kippenvel krijg. En vervolgens gaan geleidelijk aan meer mensen uit het publiek (ik vermoed leden van een koor) uit volle borst & meerstemmig mee zingen. Ik krijg er tranen van in mijn ogen!

Julia Fordham – Happy Ever After

In de muziek is het soms net als in de liefde, “op het eerste gezicht”. Dat had ik eind jaren 80 met de Engelse singer/songwriter Julia Fordham en haar prachtige lied Happy Ever After. En toen ik dat koppie zag, was ik helemaal verkocht, want zo helemaal mijn type. Ik heb de plaat dan ook grijs gedraaid en haar in Amsterdam live mogen zien. Het nummer komt van haar debuutalbum Julia Fordham uit 1988. Hier speelt ze het lied in de tv show van David Letterman in hetzelfde jaar.
