Eén van mijn favoriete nummers van 2011 was Hello Again van de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Amos Lee. Lang gezocht en nu eindelijk gevonden, in een geweldige uitvoering samen met de Tex-Mex groep Calexico. Het lied komt van het album Mission Bell (2011). Genieten!

Mijn lijst met de beste songs van het jaar 2014 liet even op zich wachten. Ik had begin december nog zo weinig bijzonders gehoord, dat ik hard op zoek ben gegaan naar nieuwe songs van artiesten die ik hoog heb zitten. En zo had ik ineens 1300 nummers om te beluisteren en daar was ik wel even zoet mee.
Dit jaar koos ik toevalligerwijze veel voor songs met orkestrale begeleiding, zoals van Mary Chapin Carpenter, Teitur, Sting, Calexico en Stef Bos. En ook een paar met alleen begeleiding van een piano, zoals van Julia Fordham, Tony DeSare en Lotte van Dijck.
Van de ongeveer 3000 nieuwe nummers die ik in 2014 hoorde zijn dit mijn favorieten. Ik heb ze weer ingedeeld naar land of plaats van herkomst.
Australië Lior – A Lift In The Morning Fog (2014) Lior – Days To Remember (2014): Hij stond al op mijn lijst van 2011 en flikt het hem weer met zijn nieuwe album Scattered Reflections, met ondermeer deze twee prachtige songs.
Burlington, USA Mary Chapin Carpenter – Come On, Come On (2014) Mary Chapin Carpenter – Mrs Hemingway (2014): Een bijzondere singer/songwriter die al jaren meegaat en nu komt met het album Songs From The Movie, waarop haar mooiste nummers gespeeld worden met orkestrale begeleiding en met arrangementen van Vince Mendoza.
Engeland Julia Fordham – Porcelain (2013) Julia Fordham – Happy Ever After (2013) Julia Fordham – Behind Closed Doors (2013) Julia Fordham – Invisible War (2013): Het is moeilijk kiezen van het album Under The Rainbow. Een verzameling van Fordham’s mooiste nummers met alleen de begeleiding van Grant Mitchell op de piano. Allemaal even prachtig. Een stem die me blijft ontroeren.
Kirsty McGee – All Things Must Change(2012): Ik volg haar al een paar jaar en ze komt steeds dichterbij.
Piers Faccini – Dreamer (2011): Lekker uptempo lied met Oost-Europese invloeden. Een singer/songwriter om in de gaten te houden, omdat hij ook in het Frans & Italiaans zingt.
Sting – Roxanne (2010): Mijn favoriete lied van dit jaar. Het komt oorspronkelijk van het debuutalbum van The Police, Outlandos d’Amour (1978). In 2010 nam Sting het op samen met The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra voor het album Symphonicities. En zo kreeg het een nieuw leven, vooral door het schitterende arrangement en de manier waarop Sting daar vocaal op inspeelt. Ze spelen het hier samen in een concert in Berlijn.
Faeröer, Denemarken Teitur – It’s Not Funny Anymore (2013): Mijn favoriete lied van begin vorig jaar. Melancholiek, kwetsbaar en intens. En met schitterende orkestrale begeleiding naar een arrangement van Van Dyke Parks.
Ierland Damien Rice – The Box (2014): Heel intens en mooi opgebouwd.
Miami, USA Gloria Estefan – Besame (2007): Gewoon lekker even dansen.
Nederland Lotte van Dijck – Jong (2011): In 2011 stond ze ook al op mijn lijst en gelukkig zingt ze nog steeds Nederlandstalig. En Lotte wordt steeds beter. Prachtige tekst.
Stef Bos – My land is jou land (Lied van Ruth)(2009) Stef Bos & Frank Boeijen – Alles is lucht (Lied van Prediker)(2009): Met orkestrale begeleiding van het Metropole Orkest weet Stef mij eindelijk weer te raken. Zijn album In een ander licht, over bijbelse figuren, is zijn beste.
New York, USA Catherine Russell – Bring It Back (2014) Catherine Russell – I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart (2014) Catherine Russell – I Cover The Waterfront(2014): Drie songs van haar album Bring It Back die het radioprogramma van de Songcatcher openden, dus dat zegt genoeg. Heerlijke muziek.
Tony DeSare – How Deep Is Your Love (2011) Tony DeSare – To Make You Feel My Love (2011): Deze jazz-zanger is een specialist in prachtige covers. Daarom kwam hij ook al in 2012 voorbij op deze lijst. Deze keer met covers van The Bee Gees en Bob Dylan met alleen de briljante pianist Ted Firth als muzikaal begeleider.
Noorwegen Moddi – House By The Sea(2013): Verstild en toch opgewekt. Met een schitterende tekst.
Norman, USA Michael McDonald & Nathan East – Moondance (2014): Een overbekend lied van Van Morrison in een uiterst frisse en knallende versie door McDonald, die helemaal los gaat, en bassist East die voor een schitterend arrangement heeft gezorgd. Geweldig opgebouwd.
Frankrijk Cécile McLorin Salvant – Baby Have Pity On Me (2013): Nieuw jazz-talent en dat laat ze hier horen.
Tucson, USA Calexico – Crystal Frontier (2012): Het Weense ORF Radio Symfonie-orkest maakt de muziek van de groep meeslepend in dit heerlijke nummer naar een kort verhaal van de Mexicaanse schrijver Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012).

De Amerikaanse groep Calexico combineert Amerikaanse & Mexicaanse muziek met elkaar. Hun naam is afkomstig van de plaats Calexico in Californië aan de grens met Mexico. Ik kende ze vooral van hun nummer Quattro van hun album Feast Of Wire (2003).
Onlangs vond ik het prachtige lied Crystal Frontier dat ze speelden tijdens een concert met het ORF Radio Symfonieorkest van Wenen in 2012. Het concert kun je vinden op het live album Spiritoso (2013). Het lied is opgedragen aan de Mexicaanse schrijver Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) en is geïnspireerd door zijn boek La frontera de cristal uit 1995 en het korte verhaal met dezelfde titel dat er in staat.
