Ik vond een bijzondere uitvoering van het prachtige en intense lied It Takes a Lot To Know a Man van de Ierse singer/songwriter Damien Rice, dat hij acapella zingt samen met het Berlijnse koor Cantus Domus. Het origineel komt van zijn album My Favourite Faded Fantasy uit 2014.
Het lied gaat er over dat liefde niet zo makkelijk is als sommige mensen denken dat het hoort te zijn. Het vraagt soms veel van ons om de geliefde, een man of een vrouw, echt te leren kennen. Een liefdesrelatie kan angstaanjagend en emotioneel zijn. Er kan twijfel zijn of het wel de moeite waard is, al die opoffering, compromissen, kwetsbaarheid, verbinding en pijn. Het kost soms moeite om de ander om hulp te vragen. Maar tegelijkertijd is het ook de moeite waard om een man of een vrouw echt te leren kennen in een relatie. Het gaat daarbij niet alleen over communicatie met woorden, maar ook over het aanvoelen en fysiek en sexueel contact maken. En de nieuwsgierigheid naar en het kennen van het kind in de ander.

Muziekliefhebber Leo Blokhuis heeft samen met zijn vrouw, de zangeres Ricky Koole, een aantal prachtige verzamelalbums gemaakt met Songs We Should Not Forget. Het zijn er inmiddels zes: Sleeping Beauties (2009), Lost and Found (2010), Back on Track (2011), Time Will Tell (2013), May You Never (2015) & Whatever Happened to Christmas (2016). Dankzij deze collectie en daarnaast ook nog zijn andere verzamelalbums Sound of the Westcoast 1965-1979 (2010) & Sound of the South 1961-1976 (2011), heb ik veel mooie en bijzondere muziek ontdekt.
Eén van de nummers die me aansprak was Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues van de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Danny O’Keefe uit 1967, dat een hit werd in 1972. Heerlijke relaxte muziek vooral door het ritme en de gitaarpartij en een prachtige tekst. Hier hoor je het origineel. En hier zingt O’Keefe het in 2012.
Het lied wordt hier weergaloos vertolkt door Alison Krauss en haar begeleiders. Krauss zingt zoals altijd weer vlekkeloos en soms wordt haar muziek me daardoor wat vlak en afstandelijk. Maar omdat dit zo’n lekker nummer is, klopt het hier weer helemaal.

De Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Diane Birch kwam in 2009 met het geweldige album Bible Belt, dat me deed hopen dat ze de nieuwe Carole King zou worden. Maar helaas is ze op zoek gegaan naar haar eigen geluid en daarbij totaal verdwaald. Gelukkig kan ik haar op haar best laten horen & zien aan je met haar soulvolle lied Don’t Wait Up, dat ze speelt samen met Daryl Hall (die je kent van Hall & Oates) en zijn geweldige groep muzikanten. De enthousiaste gitarist tussen Hall & Birch in is Tom T-Bone Wolk (1951-2010), die sinds 1981 basgitaar speelde bij Hall & Oates en daar ook musical director was.

Ik heb weer een geweldig optreden voor je gevonden van de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Rhiannon Giddens. Ze was mijn zangeres van het jaar in 2015 en hier zingt ze een bekende Amerikaanse traditional, het folk en gospel lied Wayfaring Stranger, dat stamt uit de 19e eeuw.
Het nummer is door veel artiesten gecovered, zoals door Joan Baez, Tim Buckley, Glen Campbell, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Eva Cassidy, Johnny Cash, Ed Sheeran, Neil Young en Eric Bibb. Maar zo mooi en intens gezongen heb ik het nog nooit gehoord. Giddens wordt begeleid door de Schot Phil Cunningham op accordeon.

Ik heb weer veel nieuwe muziek geluisterd dit jaar op zoek naar pareltjes, en heb de beste nummers eruit geselecteerd en met je gedeeld op mijn Facebookpagina, op deze blog en in mijn radioprogramma van de Songcatcher. Van de nummers die ik in 2017 voor het eerst hoorde zijn dit mijn favorieten. Ik heb ze weer ingedeeld naar land of plaats van herkomst (indien bekend). Heerlijke nummers met verrassende goede teksten.

(2017) Gregory Porter – It’s Probably Me (cover Sting & Eric Clapton)(2017) Gregory Porter – Just The Way You Are (cover Bruno Mars)(2017): Eén van mijn favoriete zangers en ook dit jaar weer uitzonderlijk goed, met drie schitterende covers, waarbij vooral de eerste me veel doet.
Colombia Marta Gomez – La vida esta por empezar(2016): Een zangeres met een stem die me raakt, omdat ze zich kwetsbaar toont.
Engeland Jon Allen – Here Tonight (2011) Jon Allen – Last Orders (2011) Jon Allen – Stealing Away (2011): Drie mooie nummers van een singer/songwriter die goed naar Paul McCartney heeft geluisterd toen die nog bij The Beatles zat.
Piers Faccini – A Taste Of Honey (2016): Bijzondere versie van een lied dat ik van The Beatles ken, gespeeld door deze multi-culturele singer/songwriter samen met de Italiaanse trompettist Luca Aquino, op een verzamelalbum ter ere van Chet Baker.
Seal – It Was A Very Good Year (2017): Verrassend mooie cover van deze klassieker op een album met Standards.
Italië Sergio Cammariere – Controluce (2012) Sergio Cammariere – Mano nella mano(2014) Sergio Cammariere & Chiara Chivello – Con te o senza te(2016): Sfeervolle muziek van deze uitstekende singer/songwriter & pianist.
Los Angeles (California) USA Alison Krauss – Gentle On My Mind (cover John Hartford)(2017) Alison Krauss – I Never Cared For You (cover Willie Nelson)(2017): Prachtige stem, heerlijke muziek.
Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) USA Iron & Wine – Song In Stone (2017): Deze singer/songwriter is één van de ontdekkingen van dit jaar. Prachtig.
Nashville (Tennessee) USA Raul Malo – Besame Mucho(2012) Raul Malo – Early Morning Rain (cover Gordon Lightfoot)(2004) Raul Malo – Husbands and Wives (2007) Raul Malo – Remember(cover Harry Nilsson)(2006) Raul Malo – Sway (2014): Ik ben erg onder de indruk van de geweldige stem van deze lead-zanger van de Amerikaanse neo-traditional countryband The Mavericks. Heb alle solo-albums beluisterd en een paar pareltjes overgehouden.
Nederland Janne Schra –Oppervlak (2017): Het ontroerende gedicht Er zijn dingen die alleen het oppervlak beroeren van Vasalis (1909-1998), op muziek gezet door deze zangeres en componist Reinout Douma. Vasalis schreef het voor haar zoontje Dicky, die overleed in 1943 als gevolg van een polio-epidemie.
New York (New York) USA John Mayer – Helpless(2017): Heerlijk ritmisch uptempo nummer.
John Pizzarelli – I Can Let Go Now (cover Michael McDonald)(2012): Prachtig arrangement met blazers door deze Amerikaanse jazz gitarist & zanger.
Portugal Antonio Zambujo & Mayra Andrade: Lisboa Não Sejas Francesa (2017): Zijn laatste solo-album viel me wat tegen, dus was ik blij met dit mooie duet met de Kaapverdiaanse zangeres Mayra Andrade, dat komt van een verzamelalbum ter ere van Amalia Rodrigues, de koningin van de fado.
Santa Barbara (California) USA Blue Sky Riders – Dream (2013) Blue Sky Riders – Feelin’ Brave (2013) Blue Sky Riders – How About Now (2013) Blue Sky Riders – Just Say Yes (2013): Ik ben al jaren fan van Kenny Loggins en was blij hem weer aan het werk te horen in dit trio singer/songwriters.
Spanje Pablo Alboran & Carminho: Al Paraiso (2017): Zeer populaire zanger in een mooi duet met de Portugese Carminho.
Verenigde Staten Randy Newman – She Chose Me(2017): Inmiddels 74 maar met nog steeds prachtige songs, zoals dit ontroerende liefdeslied.
Leslie Odom Jr – Seriously (2016): De Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles werd gevraagd een lied te schrijven over de reactie van Obama op de verkiezing van zijn opvolger. Hoe zou hij binnenskamers gereageerd hebben? Geweldig lied.
Lizz Wright – Stars Fell On Alabama (2017): Mooie uitvoering van deze klassieker uit 1934 door een jazz-zangeres die steeds beter wordt.
Zweden Good Harvest – Woodstock (cover Joni Mitchell)(2016): Prachtige meerstemmige versie door dit veelbelovende duo.
