The Real Group – It Becomes Her

Hij zegt er zelf het volgende over: “A friend of mine asked me to write a song that described how music reduced her depression and anxiety. Others who suffered like her might be strengthened when listening to the song, she reasoned. I received an extensive mail where she explained how she felt when she was caught in despair and how music could liberate her. Maria’s words became a poem and a song.”

It Becomes Her
I know this girl, her name is Maria.
She really wears the most beautiful smile.
Could it be that glitter in her eyes?
I can’t say, but it becomes her.

A friend of mine for quite a few years now.
Maria’s messages keep coming in,
asking “How’s your family, your life?”
So concerned, and it becomes her.

Sharp against those heavy skies.
Barbwire in a black and white shot.
Like an image of perpetual pain,
that ties me down knot by knot.

Hard against my naked skin.
Barbwire on an infinite fence.
On the days when all my tears run dry,
I focus through a frozen lens.

You keep me warm for a little while.
You keep my flowers fresh with water.
You keep my eyes on a bird in flight.
Oh music, can I keep you forever?

Some days are good, she tells me, Maria
A job to do, perhaps meeting a friend.
Dares to post an Instagram smile,
almost true, still it becomes her.

Relieve my pain!
Maria keeps praying,
“Where’s hope and harmony,
where’s my relief?”
Thinks out loud,
“Could anyone compose me a song?”
One that becomes me.

Fast around, in total craze.
Tumble driers make an insane sound.
Oh Twisting, turning every part of my brain,
I ride a nightmare merry-go-round
And around, and around.

Strong around my whirlwind soul.
Tumble driers form a cage of distress.
I’m confined in a dispassionate void.
A vacuum world of soundlessness.

You keep me warm for a little while.
You keep my flowers fresh with water.
You keep my eyes on a bird in flight.
Oh music, can I keep you forever?

You keep me safe for a minute more.
You keep my sun from setting too soon.
You keep my world in a melody.
Oh music, can I keep you forever?

I know this girl, her name is Maria.

Rufus Wainwright & Rachael Price – Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk

“The song addresses decadence and desire, and has been called an “ode to subtle addictions and the way our compulsions rule our lives”.”

Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk
Cigarettes and chocolate milk.
These are just a couple of my cravings.
Everything it seems
I like’s a little bit stronger,
a little bit thicker,
a little bit harmful for me.

If I should buy jellybeans.
Have to eat them
all in just one sitting.
Everything it seems
I like’s a little bit sweeter,
a little bit fatter,
a little bit harmful for me.

And then there’s those other things.
Which for several reasons
we won’t mention.
Everything about ’em
is a little bit stranger,
a little bit harder,
a little bit deadly.

It isn’t very smart.
Tends to make one part,
so brokenhearted.

Sitting here remembering me.
Always been a shoe
made for the city.
Go ahead accuse me
of just singing about places,
with scrappy boys faces,
have general run of the town.

Playing with prodigal sons.
Takes a lot of sentimental Valiums.
Can’t expect the world
to be your Raggedy Andy,
while running on empty,
you little old doll with a frown.

You got to keep in the game.
Retaining mystique
while facing forward.
I suggest a reading of
a Lesson in Tightropes,
Or Surfing Your High Hopes,
or Adios, Kansas.

It isn’t very smart.
Tends to make one part,
so brokenhearted.

Still there’s not a show on my back.
Holes or a friendly intervention.
I’m just a little bit heiress,
a little bit Irish,
a little bit Tower of Pisa.
Whenever I see ya.
So please be kind,
if I’m a mess.

Cigarettes and chocolate milk.
Cigarettes and chocolate milk.

We leven onze dromen.

We leven onze dromen.
Maar kijk nu eens waar we staan.
Kon daar alleen op hopen.
Zien en dan geloven.

Jij weet als geen ander
hoe wij zijn veranderd nu.
Maar hey dat is goed.
Bekeek van een afstand,
met trots vanuit mijn kant,
naar hoe jij bent gegroeid.

Hoe we samen zijn geworden.
Hoe we samen zijn geland.
Dat je hiervoor bent geboren,
dat had ik allang verwacht.
Jij weet als geen ander.

Jij weet als geen ander
hoe wij zijn veranderd nu.
Maar hey dat is goed.
Bekeek van een afstand,
met trots vanuit mijn kant,
naar hoe jij bent gegroeid.

Hoe we samen zijn geworden.
Hoe we samen zijn geland.
Dat je hiervoor bent geboren.
Dat had ik allang verwacht.
Jij weet als geen ander.

Lake Street Dive & Madison Cunningham – Neighbor Song

De band zegt het volgende over deze bijzondere opname: “Madison Cunningham is an extremely special musician, the kind who can make a single note sound like music and who breathes life into every song that she comes into contact with. We feel so honored to have had her join us on one of our songs. We first recorded “Neighbor Song” in 2010, shortly after a few of us had moved to Brooklyn. The song narrates an experience, all too familiar to many New York City apartment dwellers, of overhearing your neighbors making love. Involuntarily bearing witness to such intimacy inspires a potent mix of emotions from annoyance to despair to compassion. It’s a fun song to play live because we get to walk the audience through this emotional journey. Some audiences laugh a lot when we play it. Some cry a lot. In preparing to do this song on tour with Madison we came up with a new musical treatment for the song to bring out some different sides of those emotions. We recorded it with Madison in Brooklyn, live in one room in a single take. We hope it makes you laugh and/or cry!”

Neighbor Song
I can hear my neighbors
making love upstairs.
Their love is rattling
my tables and my chairs.
Keeping me awake.
The love they make,
it’s keeping me awake
While I’m just trying to get
some sleep on the ground floor.

I don’t mind my neighbors
making love upstairs.
‘Cause I was once the lover,
making all my neighbors scared.
You and me
thundering the floorboards,
with our power and our force.
While they’re just trying
to get some sleep
on the ground floor.

I can hear my neighbors
making love upstairs.
Their love is amplifying
all of my despair.
‘Cause I was once a lover,
now I have to listen
to my neighbors
making love upstairs,
from down on the ground floor.

In this city all the humans live in layers.
I got people down the hall
and down the stairs.
We all move in and out,
and live our lives
in stacks and rows and pairs.
And try to find someone
with whom we can share it.

I can hear my neighbors
making love upstairs.
I wish I didn’t have to be
so well informed of their affairs.
But if they have to be doing something,
at least they’re having fun.
Sometimes I forget
that all of us are only human.
‘Cause we’re all stacked
in rows and columns,
and if one of them
should fall on me.
My neighbors making love upstairs
would crush me.
I’m down on the ground floor.

Joan Osborne & The Funk Brothers – What Becomes of The Broken Hearted

Marvin Gaye (toetsen & drums), Joe Sample (toetsen), Billy Preston (toetsen), Larry Knechtel (toetsen), Harvey Mason (drums), James Gadson (drums), Ray Parker jr (gitaar), Wah Wah Watson (gitaar) & Dean Parks (gitaar).

What Becomes of The Broken Hearted
As I walk this land of broken dreams,
I have visions of many things.
Happiness is just an illusion,
filled with sadness and confusion.

What becomes of the brokenhearted.
Who had love that’s now departed?
I know I’ve got to find
some kind of peace of mind.
Maybe.

The fruits of love grow all around,
but for me they come tumblin’ down.
Every day heartaches grow a little stronger.
I can’t stand this pain much longer.

I walk in shadows, searching for light.
Cold and alone, no comfort in sight.
Hoping and praying for someone who cares,
always moving and going nowhere.

What becomes of the brokenhearted.
Who had love that’s now departed?
I know I’ve got to find
some kind of peace of mind.
Tell me please.

I’m searching though I don’t succeed,
but someone look, there’s a growing need.
All is lost, there’s no place for beginning.
All that’s left is an unhappy ending.

What becomes of the brokenhearted.
Who had love that’s now departed?

What becomes of the brokenhearted.
Tell me. Tell me. Tell me.

I’ll be searching everywhere,
just find someone to care.
