This Is On Me is een prachtige scheidingsduet van de Australische singer/songwriter Ben Abraham met de Amerikaanse Sara Bareilles. Het is erg goed gezongen. Het nummer komt van Abraham’s album Sirens uit 2016.
Ben Abraham komt uit een muzikaal nest met ouders die samenspeelden in de Indonesische groep Pahama. Thuis luisterden ze vooral naar The Beatles en Chicago. Tijdens zijn filmstudie trad Abraham af en toe op in ziekenhuizen als entertainer voor kinderen. Nu is hij full time musicus en tourde hij o.a. met Emmylou Harris.

Heerlijke samenzang in deze versie van Send My Love (To Your New Lover) van de Engelse singer/songwriter Adele door I’m With Her, een trio Amerikaanse singer/songwriters, dat bestaat uit Sarah Jarosz, Sara Watkins & Aoife O’Donovan. Dat zijn niet de minsten en de bassist is Paul Kowert van de Punch Brothers.
Het nummer komt van het album 25 (2015) van Adele, die het nummer schreef samen met de Zweedse songwriters Max Martin & Shellback. Het is een “blij-dat-je wegbent”– nummer dat refereert aan een ex-vriend van haar.

Terwijl de meeste artiesten op leeftijd teruggrijpen op hun bekende werk uit het verleden, zien we bij de inmiddels 76-jarige David Crosby juist dat hij komt met nieuw materiaal en dat hij zich laat inspireren door jonge muzikanten en vocalisten. Crosby heeft in twee jaar tijd twee nieuwe albums uitgebracht. Voor het album Lighthouse (2016) werkte hij samen met gitarist en producer Michael League van de jazzband Snarky Puppy, en voor zijn nieuwste album Sky Trails (2017) zocht hij de samenwerking met zijn zoon toetsenist & producer James Raymond, met wie hij eerder samenwerkte in de groep CPR (Crosby, Pevar & Raymond).
Om te beginnen hoor je hier She’s Got To Be Somewhere, een nummer van Sky Trails dat klinkt alsof Crosby zijn innerlijke Steely Dan heeft gekanaliseerd, en dat werd geschreven door James Raymond. Crosby wordt erbij begeleid door Jeff Pevar op gitaar, Mai Agan op bas, Steve DiStanislao op drums, Michelle Willis op toetsen & achtergrond zang en James Raymond op toetsen.
Maar ook David Crosby ontkomt er natuurlijk niet aan af en toe terug te grijpen op zijn uitgebreide en succesvolle muzikale verleden. Hij doet dat hier met een prachtige meerstemmige versie van Woodstock (1969) van Joni Mitchell, waarbij Crosby samenspeelt met een deel van zijn Lighthouse Band: Michael League, Becca Stevens & Michelle Willis. Ik vind het ontroerend om te zien hoe de oude meester omgaat met zijn pupillen.
Ik heb al eerder twee Woodstock-versies op mijn Songcatcherblog gedeeld. Eén van het Zweedse duo Good Harvest uit 2016, die je hier aantreft. En daarnaast een heel bijzondere versie van de Amerikaanse groep Skylark uit 1973, die je hier vind. De tekst van het lied tref je bij beide versies aan.

Het prachtige lied Lady Of The Water van de Engelse singer/songwriter Jon Allen heeft alles in zich om een klassieker te worden. Ik hoorde het voor het eerst bij mijn goede vriendin Yolande, die een heel brede smaak heeft en me al vaker van mooie muzikale tips heeft voorzien. Het nummer komt van Allen’s album Deep River uit 2014. Spreekt het lied je aan, deel het dan vooral met je muzikale vrienden, want dan heeft het ook meer kans dat het ooit echt een klassieker gaat worden.

Eén van de mooiste Nederlandstalige liederen is Als de liefde mar blef winnen van de Drentse singer/songwriter Daniël Lohues. Het grijpt duidelijk terug op het werk van Jules de Corte (1924-1996), ook met het citaat uit Bach (Prelude in E groot). Het lied komt van zijn album Allennig II (2008) en was één van mijn beste songs van 2011.
Het nummer is volgens Frank Boeijen het beste Nederlandse lied, en staat bij hem boven 5 uur van Ramses Shaffy, Liefde van later van Herman van Veen, Tegen de tijd van Huub van der Lubbe en Je veux l’amour van Raymond van ’t Groenewoud. Hij vind het een toepasselijk lied in deze barre tijden. Hier hoor je zijn bijzondere versie van Als de liefde.
