American Tune is een schitterend lied van de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Paul Simon, dat komt van zijn 3e solo-album There Goed Rhymin’ Simon uit 1973. Hij zingt het hier tijdens een optreden in de tv-show van Michael Parkinson (1935-2023) bij de BBC in 1975.
Simon schreef het lied toen Richard Nixon (1913-1994) net was verkozen tot president in 1968 en is nu weer heel actueel wat mij betreft.
De muziek van het lied is trouwens gebaseerd op het gezang O hoofd vol bloed en wonden (O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden) van de Lutherse predikant Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) uit 1656, dat door Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) werd gebruikt in zijn Matthäuspassion (1727).
Ik zag deze opname voorbij komen in een zeer boeiende documentaire over Simon gemaakt door Alex Gibney in 2023. De titel is In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon.
