Het beste album van de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Stevie Wonder is voor mij Innervisions uit 1973, met prachtige nummers als Too High, Golden Lady, Don’t You Worry ‘bout A Thing en He’s Misstra Know It All. Maar het mooiste nummer is toch het liefdeslied All In Love Is Fair.
Onlangs vond ik een hele mooie cover door de Amerikaanse zangeres Dionne Warwick uit 1975. Ze wordt daarbij begeleid door het orkest van Alan Peters en laat weer horen wat een fantastische zangeres ze is. Wat een rust, intensiteit en stembeheersing. En ik kreeg kippenvel bij de hoge uithalen!

De Canadese singer/songwriter Adam Cohen begint zich steeds meer te ontworstelen aan de schaduw van zijn vader, de dichter/schrijver & singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen. Samen met een groep enthousiaste muzikanten maakt hij muziek om vrolijk van te worden, zoals in dit heerlijke titelnummer van zijn laatste album We Go Home (2014). De beste live versie die ik eerst had uitgezocht kun je hier bekijken. Maar deze is ook best lekker.

Eén van mijn favoriete nummers van de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter James Taylor is Secret O’ Life. Taylor had last van een erfelijke depressie en daaraan gekoppeld last van verslavingen aan alcohol en drugs om de heftige emoties te onderdrukken. De tekst van het lied is typisch iets wat een depressief iemand tegen zichzelf zegt om zich moed in te spreken. Waarschijnlijk na het duizenden malen van anderen te hebben gehoord. Om de titel niet al te pretentieus te laten klinken koos hij voor Secret O’ Life en niet voor The Secret Of Life, zodat het ook refereerde aan Amerikaanse snoepjes als Pep O Mint en Wint O Green. Hij beschouwt het lied zelf als een spiritual en schreef het in 1977 voor het album JT. Hier speelt hij het tijdens de tv show van Dick Cavett in hetzelfde jaar. Eerder zag je bij de Songcatcher al een cover door de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter India Arie van het nummer.

Eén van mijn favoriete nummers van dit jaar is Above The Clouds Of Pompeii van de Engelse groep Bear’s Den. Een lied met een prachtige tekst, een mooie opbouw en heerlijke samenzang. Het komt van hun debuutalbum Islands (2014).

In de jaren 80 & 90 luisterde ik veel naar Smooth Soul en R&B muziek, met artiesten als Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, Babyface, Brian McKnight, George Benson, Jeffrey Osborne, Lionel Richie, Luther Vandross, Maxwell, Maysa, Michael Jackson, Sade, en bands als Drizabone, Impromp2, Incognito en Shalamar. Ook Patti Austin en James Ingram hoorden bij mijn favorieten uit die periode. In 1983 hadden ze samen een grote hit met Baby Come To Me, een heerlijk liefdesduet tussen twee geweldige vocalisten.
Vooral van de stem van James Ingram kan ik erg genieten. Als hij begint te zingen dan gebeurt er iets bijzonders. Zijn debuutalbum It’s Your Night (1983) heb ik dan ook veel gedraaid. Van origine is hij pianist, zo speelde hij in de band van Ray Charles. Als zanger werd hij ontdekt door Quincy Jones, maar als songwriter was hij ook succesvol, bijvoorbeeld met het nummer PYT (1982) dat hij schreef voor Michael Jackson. Het meeste succes had hij met zijn duetten met o.a. Patti Austin (How Do You Keep The Music Playing, 1983), Michael McDonald (Yah Mo B There, 1983, dat hij zelf schreef), Linda Ronstadt (Somewhere Out There, 1987) en Dolly Parton (The Day I Fall In Love, 1994).
Patti Austin was ook een vocalist waar ik in de jaren 80 en 90 graag naar luisterde. Ze blonk uit als achtergrondzangeres (zo was ze te horen op Just The Way You Are van Billy Joel), maar ook op haar eigen albums.
Het lied Baby Come To Me werd geschreven door de Engelse songwriter Rod Temperton, die ook een aantal hits schreef voor Michael Jackson, zoals Thriller en Rock With You. De produktie van het nummer was in handen van de Amerikaanse producer, componist en arrangeur Quincy Jones, de man die Austin, Ingram & Temperton met elkaar verbindt. Patti Austin had haar grootste successen in de jaren 80 op zijn label Qwest Records. James Ingram brak door dankzij het album The Dude (1981) van Quincy Jones, waarop hij twee nummers zong. Rod Temperton tenslotte werd in 1979 door Jones gevraagd om mee te schrijven aan het album Of The Wall van Michael Jackson.
